Short-Haul Travel Challenge
Challenge:
This six-hour case for Bombardier challenged my Engineering and Commerce Case Competition team to design a completely new vehicle and system for use in short-haul travel while taking into consideration multiple factors, including mobility as a service, integration with current systems, first and last mile, and carbon footprint per passenger.
Solution:
Vehicle design: We identified the crowded roads leading to an airport where time and sustainability efficiencies could be achieved. The vehicle design aspect of our solution was an electric van capable of picking up a traveller at their home/current location–and then driving to a set of purpose-built train tracks where rail wheels would then deploy for a direct journey to the airport that circumvents all of the typical traffic. These vans would charge on the rail tracks, eliminating the need for refueling and reducing the carbon footprint.
